Getting airborn under spring sunset

The Kangiqsujuaq Snow Park has now 5 jumps aligned perpendicular to dominant wind right on the bay in front of the community. In between clinics, George and Peter had a chance to challenge themselves into jumping. That is when I found out they had been training for the past two months.  


An evening for adults only!
April 19, 2007, Kimmirut, Nunavut
Tuesday, after a full day, with 3 elementary classes visiting us, we improvised an evening session to accommodate those who were working during the day. So from 7to 9:30PM, many got their chance to get a real test drive as the wind was just right to have some nice fun on a first trial. Already we are discovering pretty good riding skills and some talented people on ski or snowboard.  


CBC Radio North gets in the driver seat!

On Sunday morning, the wind got strong and steady enough to give some initiation classes. Meagan from CBC Radio North came down to interview George and I and gave it a try. George Pilurtuut, a very good friend of mine is also the recreation coordinator of Kangiqsujuaq who introduced the Paraski to his community. Just like everyone else, she learned quickly...  


Easter Initiation camp

During initiation camps throughout, we often discovered talented young people. Kuujjuaq was no exception. Lukasi, ten-year old, was flying across the small bay of Stewart Lake in no time. Two days later...  


Good wind and enthusiat participation

In the morning our participants Jose, Harry and William with Minnie an Palusie are again the first to be at Post Lake base camp. At lunch we are joined by many community residents, kids parents helders get together into a rapidly improvised feast were nothing is missing from frozen char with misserac and banic to fish sandwich, hot dogs and deserts...  


A good stimulating session to kick-off the spring season

At noon the wind picked-up to 35km, enough for hunter and expert paraskier Lukasi Tukirqi who just loves it when it's windy, like now. Carver Eze Saggiak also came down for his first try, and certainly not the last...
 


Northern Canada winter slowly picking-up

As this winter is exceptionally slow to kick in, we propose you to find out by yourself, when do rivers, bay, sea banks really freezes and when the tundra gets covered with snow. At the same time, you will discover when local residents can start to use their winter routes to access their camps, go fishing on remote lakes or hunting in the tundra. That time is when, one of the most beautiful snow park in northern Canada, is ready for winter activities...  


Nunavik hockey champions become Paraski riders in one hour

We arrived the week this proud community was celebrating their three local hockey teams (Senior, Junior & Women) after winning top honors in their respective category during annual Nunavik 2006 hockey tournament. It did not take long before this athletic community managed the simple and easy technique of Parasking. In no time they were racing across Wakeham Bay with their teammates...  


Close collaboration for optimal community enjoyment

The winter-spring season ended on a great note for the Kunoki Team with our visit in Kangiqsujuak. Although the stormy weather of the weeks proceeding led to uneven wind conditions, the Kunoki team managed to train c lose to 80 people in this small but energetic community of Nunavik...

In step with its recent ventures in Nunavik, the Kangirsuk Kunoki Club took advantage of the Makivik Corporation annual general meeting in Kangirsuk, held from April 4th to the 7th, to showcase the activity of paraskiing to the delegates, with the participation of the local riders & newly trained instructors...

Alex Kudluc, Minnie Annahatak and William Nungak are Nunavik's first paraskiing instructors. Following an eight-day Kunoki training camp, the three residents of Kangirsuk have graduated from beginner to full-fledged instructors and are now in a position to pass on their knowledge and enthusiasm to other interested individuals in their community or abroad...
